Abstract: Progeny Systems proposes to develop a system for displaying relevant information to the submarine command team, overlaid on imaging streams by using augmented reality techniques. Progeny will allow decision makers to select bathymetric, navigational, contact management, and other information in context as layers over an imaging feed. This approach will provide increased situational awareness while reducing information overload and lowering overall cognitive load associated with safe navigation.
Benefits: The proposed technology would enhance situational awareness and reduce the burden on pilots, navigators, operators, and analysts while minimizing the risk of human errors. Specific benefits include: Reduced Workload - Reduces burden on the navigator / operator by providing wide range of information in single, simplified display Cost Reduction - Provides innovative capabilities with existing equipment Software-Only Solution - Requires no additional hardware, minimal processing resources The ability to provide augmented reality data overlays on video streams in real time should be of interest to multiple government organizations (including the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Army; the Office of Naval Intelligence; FBI; etc.). Each of these organizations could use visualizations and user interfaces for a wide variety of hardware-software systems and would benefit from the proposed capabilities.
