Abstract: This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will develop a photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) featuring a sample rate of 102 GS/s and a resolution of 7 effective bits (ENOB) at analog input frequencies of 50-200 GHz. The ADC uses very low-jitter optical sampling and interleaves multiple electronic ADCs.
Benefits: This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will begin development of a high-speed, medium-resolution photonic ADC that can directly digitize RF signals in the 50-200 GHz frequency range. As a result, this frequency range will be opened to digital receivers, software radio, and other systems based on digital signal processing. Most initial use will be military systems that require very high performance ADCs. There will be a commercial market too, but only as the photonic ADC matures and becomes more economical.
