Abstract: After preliminary safety evaluation for friction, static, impact, ignition temperature sensitivity, additional testing will be performed. By comparing the properties of both aged and un-aged samples, SMRC will be able to suggest additional modifications, if needed, to produce moisture insensitive pyrotechnic formulations.
Benefits: If successful, the formulation produced will eliminate aging effects found in Airborne Expendable Infrared Countermeasures (AEIRCMs) utilized by the U.S. Navy. After qualification, these formulation can be used in a number of other fusing and pyrotechnic applications where humidity-based aging effects are decreasing readiness for the Navy and Marines. After acceptance by the Navy, other DoD components can begin transitioning into other energetics systems that demonstrate this same type of aging. With a broad product base in the DoD, the material could be transitioned to civilian maritime flares.
