Abstract: Current inspection methods for Integrally Bladed Rotors (IBRs) and compressor blades are limited to contact measurement systems that scan individual points, defined lines, or surfaces and non-contact systems that use point and line scanning techniques. While the leading edges (high-curvature) and trailing edges (sharp edge) are the most critical to measure, these are the most challenging for both contact and optical techniques. As a result, the current inspection methods require hundreds of hours to complete a single IBR inspection. During this project, Creare proposes to develop an Automated IBR Inspection System (AIIS) that provides fast, highly accurate, and cost effective inspection. Our system combines automated part handling, measurement of key dimensions, and novel capabilities to assess tip and leading edge wear. During Phase I, we will demonstrate key elements of the system, characterize system performance on representative parts, and develop a design for the system to be developed during Phase II. During Phase II we plan to develop a fully functional system to enable the Navy to evaluate use of the system in an operational setting.
Benefits: The technology developed on this project will provide a new capability for rapid inspection of jet engine compressor blades and IBRs for both military and commercial sectors.
