Abstract: The focus of our Intelligence and Intuition for Enhanced Decision Making (I2EDM) Phase 1 research is to provide efficient and timely automated production and dissemination of information products in support of doctrinal Decision Points for the Company and below in austere environments. Operating in the Cloud, I2EDM will continuously fuse tactical information with human intuition and experience to push data relevant to the decision support matrix to the Commander in the field. The Modus Operandi Team's solution will define, prototype, and develop a fusion approach that goes beyond JDL level 0 (Subobject assessment) and 1 (Object assessment) fusion to approach level 2 (Situation assessment) and level 3 (Impact assessment) fusion. The intelligence data will continue to be updated in the cloud as new intelligence arrives, even when the end users are offline. As processing is completed, the distributed data will then be recombined, or reduced, into the normalized fused results, and made available to the decision makers or analysts for further refinement. The analyst will then have the opportunity to adjust certainty assessments and constraining assumptions, add missing information, remove irrelevant or inaccurate data, and otherwise influence the direction of machine processing prior to the predictive analysis step.
Benefits: On-demand intelligence is essential to making the right decision at the right time necessary to safely and successfully accomplish objectives of the military mission. I2EDM will run in the cloud, even while the mobile forces are offline, to create a composite picture of the surrounding environment. At any time when opportunity and need present themselves; operators may reach into the cloud to retrieve the real-time data updates of intelligence relevant to the decision points of the mission. Identification of these decision points drives both operational and Intelligence data requirements. Currently, the ability of a commander and his staff to accurately predict the effects of weather, terrain, and enemy activity relies on the operator's capacity to process available data within strict time limitations using static, inflexible methods such as Excel Spreadsheets. I2EDM will; 1) Improve situational awareness while significantly reducing manual processing of military intelligence; 2) provide reasoning over events to determine event correlation and project future paths; 3) incorporate human intuition into the process; 4) increase levels of fusion of data from multiple information sources. Our overall strategy for achieving technology transition and commercialization success will be to position I2EDM as a high-value enhancement to our Wave Exploitation Framework (Wave-EF) product and related services, thereby leveraging our existing commercialization momentum and resources. Our three-pronged approach to achieving this strategy is to: (1) transition the I2EDM technology to Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs), (2) deploy the technology to our other existing defense and intelligence sector customers, and (3) leverage partnerships with prime contractors and commercial software vendors as channels for broader commercialization. Our overall goal is to build a profitable line-of-business while providing high return-on-investment to our ONR, PMMI and MARCORSYSCOM transition customers.
