Abstract: This project addresses the need for a compact, light-weight water treatment system for use on Navy vessels that operate primarily in littoral waters. A modular and intelligent system design will be developed, featuring a novel second-stage disinfection module. The approach eliminates the need to carry expensive and hazardous chemicals on board, making use of low-temperature plasma chemistry to synthesize biocidal species in-situ using only water, air and a plasma generator.
Benefits: Compact, low power, water-disinfecting devices are needed for a wide array of DoD and commercial applications. If successful, the proposed technology could be used to provide water recycling services to both Navy and commercial vessels. A chemical-free disinfection system would also be beneficial for ballast water treatment (to prevent the spread of invasive species) and biofilm prevention in power plant cooling towers and HVAC systems.
