Abstract: |
Advanced Optical Systems Proximity Operations Measurements System (POMS) for terminal guidance during Autonomous Aerial Refueling (AAR) provides relative position and attitude, all 6 Degrees of Freedom (DoF), in a manner similar to that sensed by a human pilot. POMS recognizes and locates features on the tanker and drogue with a sensor on the UAS and converts the relative location of those features into 6 DoF via an inverse perspective algorithm (IPA). In addition to allowing for hookup to the drogue, the extension from 3 DoF to 6 DoF improves formation flying by sensing tanker maneuvers. |
Benefits: |
In addition to enabling autonomous aerial refueling in GPS denied environments and other DOD docking and targeting applications, AOS's position measuring technology has commercial applications ranging from vehicle parking assistants to video game motion tracking. |
