Sniper training requires the ability of the trainee to exercise observations skills (reconnaissance), marksmanship skills, and as a fighting team - sniper and spotter - decision making skills. Using gaming technology, open source systems, instrumentation, and a scalable full movement "Play Box," DIVEST will bring state-of-the-art Virtual Environments (VE) to the high fidelity reconnaissance and marksmanship training requirements needed by the military's elite Snipers. Phase 1 of this effort will develop a prototype training system design using open source Commercial Off -The-Shelf (COTS)/Government Off-The- Shelf (GOTS) technologies that will allow the trainee freedom of movement, in a necessarily limited "play box", realistic viewing of "targets", real weapons and sites, and a high level of realism in interacting with the synthetic (or gaming) environment. The Phase 1 (Option) will iterate the design determined in Phase 1 and begin the technical determination of the interfaces and development necessary to build the prototype training system in Phase 2. Benefits: The DIVEST system will provide DoD sniper training schools a state-of-the-art virtual environment updating current technologies. Additionally the capability will be deployable thus allowing for proficiency training in the field as well as at MOUT or other combined exercise locations. Commercially there are dozens of schools throughout the US that provide sniper and marksmanship training to federal, state, and local law enforcement forces. Additionally there are contractors that provide sniper services to the government such as Blackwater, USA. The DIVEST system would provide state of the art marksmanship and reconnaissance training capability to these schools and contractors. Return
