Abstract: |
Electron guns from inductive output tubes are unique in that the emission is generated by RF fields between the cathode and a grid that forms a portion of the input cavity. The grid geometry incorporates small features that are difficult to simulate with current finite difference codes due to the high mesh densities required. High mesh densities for modeling the RF fields imposes very small time steps for modeling particle trajectories. Consequently, the combination of high mesh densities for the fields and small time steps for the particles results in a significant computational challenge. This program will explore techniques to achieve accuracy in both the field and particle simulations using novel approaches to reduce the computational requirements. |
Benefits: |
Successful completion of this program will provide new techniques for modeling RF fields and particles simultaneously. This will allow development of more complex, 3D devices that take advantage of the high efficiencies that can be achieved with RF driven cathode emission. |
